Tomicus is one of the main pest species that infest Pinus yunnanensis. In Yunnan Province, Tomicus minor, Tomicus yunnanensis, and Tomicus brevipilosus have caused extensive mortality of pine trees. This study investigated the population sizes and spatial distribution of these three Tomicus species in Pinus yunnanensis trunks during the boring stage to understand their infestation patterns. Newly infested Pinus yunnanensis trunks were cut into 50 cm segments, dissected, and the species and quantities of Tomicus beetles in each segment were recorded. The results showed that in Yuxi, Tomicus minor accounted for 89.5% of the total population and was distributed throughout the trunk, while Tomicus yunnanensis accounted for 10.5% and was mainly found in the middle-upper sections. In Jianshui County, Tomicus minor made up 58.5% of the population and was distributed in the middle-lower trunk, whereas Tomicus yunnanensis accounted for 41. 5% and was found throughout the trunk. In Anning City, Tomicus minor, Tomicus yunnanensis and Tomicus brevipilosus accounted for 31.6%, 31.8% and 36.6% of the population, respectively, primarily distributed in the middle-lower, middle-upper, and entire trunk sections. For all three species across the three regions, there was no significant difference in the numbers of males and females at the same trunk height. The distribution patterns of the three Tomicus species during the boring stage varied by region, and their spatial distribution in Pinus yunnanensis trunks was closely related to their population size. These findings provide a reference for developing region-specific prevention strategies against different Tomicus species.
